It doesn't matter what university you go to to go to med school, what matters are your grades. If you want to live in NYC then try for NYU.. pick you school based on where you would be comfortable living.

You can get better letters of recommendations from them since they will know you and can give better detail on how well you are as a student. Lot of the best doctors have backgrounds from a small school because of the hands on approach to learning. The faculty is there to teach you not do it as a requirement, they want to teach!

I recommend that you find schools that have American Chemical Society (ACS) Accreditation. Those programs have undergrad research as a requirement.
